HISTORY

Monet ~ from 1937 to 2000 ~ one of the leading designers, manufacturers
and marketers of high quality, branded fashion jewelry predominantly sold in
department stores in the United States and worldwide . . . included three well
known brand names -- Monet, the world's leading brand of classically styled
fashion jewelry; Trifari, a contemporary line with the career woman in mind;
and Marvella (purchased in 1981), the popular line of pearl fashion jewelry.

The early years . . .

Michael and Jay Chernow founded Monocraft in 1929 in Providence, Rhode Island,
where they produced gold plated monogram plates for purses and other leather
accessories. The gold plated techniques developed for those monogram plates
were used to expand the business in 1937 to include costume jewelry which was
marketed as Monet. They became known as the pioneers of the barrel clutch for
pierced earrings and ear clips that adjusted to fit with more comfort. Monet
jewelry is made with a variety of base metals in addition to the gold plating
including sterling silver and silver plating. Monet jewelry manufactured
after 1955 includes the copyright symbol.

Monocraft was sold to General Mills in 1968, purchased by Crystal Brands
Jewelry Group in 1989 to 1994, acquired in 1994 by Chase Capital Partners,
Lattice Holding, Liz Claiborne purchased the company in 2000.
